The Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) once again proved its commitment to community resilience and emergency response, after its rescue team clinched the 3rd spot in the 4th Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan (KALASAG) Disaster Risk and Reduction Management (DRRM) Response and Rescue Challenge, held at the Tarlac Recreational Park on 16-18 October.

The 4th KALASAG Response and Rescue Challenge is joined by non-government organizations, private sectors, government agencies and major stakeholders in the province of Tarlac whose delegates showcased their skills and preparation for real-life scenarios. Hosted by the Tarlac Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), the activity aims not only to develop and establish the roles of participants as emergency responders but also to gear them up for the β€œBIG ONE,” a large earthquake which is predicted to hit the Philippines sooner or later.

Aside from complying with the quarterly earthquake drills, TAU also participated in the 4th KALASAG Rescue Challenge under the Volunteer Category and conquered the 12km simulation rescue march venturing from Ma. Cristina Park to Jose V. Yap Sports and Recreational Complex, Tarlac City, carrying simulated patients, and drills such as: bandaging and splinting, search and rescue of simulated drowning patient, bolo/chainsaw operation, knot tying and rappelling, basic life support, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, basic fire fighting, crashed vehicle - patient extraction, relief distribution and ambulance operation.

Mr. Ronimo Ubaldo, University Disaster Risk and Reduction Management (UDRRM) Chief, highlighted the importance of the event, stating, β€œThe dedication shown by TAU’s team is commendable. They exemplify how academic institutions can play a vital role in disaster preparedness.”

Dr. Joven D. Valez, Director of TAU National Service Training Program (NSTP), also added, β€œEveryone should know its surroundings and understand how it behaves; being prepared and knowing how to respond is the key to survival. That is the essence of being able to identify hazards and risks.”
