As a requirement in their practicum class, 2nd year BSA students apply their classroom learnings in crop production, pest management, and sustainable farming, with proper guidance from their dedicated BSA instructors.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sinamar E. Estudillo, the Dean of CAF, demonstrates her full support during the site inspection at the CAF vegetable garden. Future harvests will also be made available to the TAU community once ready.
Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) has once again gained international acclaim as its groundbreaking research on smart onion farming secured the Best Presentation Award at the 6th Asia Joint Conference on Computing (AJCC2025) at the Kansai Kenshu Center in Osaka, Japan, from 21-24 April.
Competing against top-tier research from across the continent, the project stood out for its innovative approach to revolutionizing agricultural productivity through smart farming technologies.
The award-winning study, titled โDevelopment of Smart Technologies for Profitable Onion Production,โ was funded by the Department of Science and Technology - Grants-in-Aid (DOST-GIA) and presented by Mr. Jayson J. Elenzano, Associate Professor III and project member, under the leadership of Dr. Amy Lizbeth J. Rico, General Manager of SMART Agriculture Center.
The research showcased the successful integration of IoT-based monitoring systems, automated irrigation, and smart vertical farming techniques to optimize onion cultivation. Key findings revealed a 40% increase in net profitability and a 30% reduction in water usage compared to traditional layered farming methods, proving the viability of smart agriculture in enhancing both sustainability and yield.
TAU President Dr. Silverio Ramon DC Salunson congratulated Dr. Rico and Mr. Elenzano and mentioned that such an accolade not only reinforces TAUโs reputation as a hub for research excellence but also sets the stage for broader adoption of smart farming solutions in the country.ย
โTAUโs recognition underscores its growing influence in agricultural technology and our commitment to addressing global challenges in food security and climate change,โ Dr. Salunson said.
Under the morning sun at the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) Hostel Function Hall, participants gathered early for the training and team-building activities during the โYoung Farmers Regional Bootcamp 2025 Harvest Through 4-H Milestone: Harnessing Agricultural Resilience through Vision, Education, Sustainability, and Technologyโ from 23-25 April.
