Representing Region III, athletes from Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) proudly marked a historic achievement at the 2025 State Colleges and Universities Athletics Association (SCUAA) National Games held in Camiguin Province, Northern Mindanao from 22-27 April after amassing 16 medals across seven sports disciplines.

Leading TAUโ€™s medal campaign was Merry Joy I. Trupa, who dominated the track events by securing three gold medals in the 1,500 m, 3,000 m, and 5,000 m runs, along with three silver medals in the 10,000 m run and 4x400 relay events (both women's and mixed). In Archery, Allyssa Faye R. Felipe emerged as another standout flagbearer, clinching the Overall Individual Championship gold, two distance golds, and two team silver medals.

On the track, Maria Dolores T. Pascua, Kristel Joy T. Natividad, and Jem-Jen C. Garcia added to the tally by contributing multiple silver medals in the relay events. Pascua earned silver in four relay events, Natividad captured silver in the 100 m hurdles and relay, while Garcia secured silver in the 4x100 m relay and placed commendably in individual middle-distance races.

Beyond podium finishes, other TAU athletes made strong showings as Rainier B. Valdez placed fifth in Chess, Angelica E. Licos and Mary Joy V. Advincula helped the regionโ€™s Basketball team (womenโ€™s) reach the semifinals, and Joshua V. Macadangdang assisted in boosting the Menโ€™s Volleyball team into the quarterfinals. Several athletes also qualified nationally despite challenges, while others were unable to compete due to either technical difficulties or organizational decisions.

TAU President Dr. Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson congratulated the TAUian Carabaos for waving the Universityโ€™s banner on the national stage. โ€œYour efforts and sacrifices behind the scenes, sharpening skills, fostering teamwork and instilling discipline, were instrumental in upholding excellence in sports,โ€ Dr. Salunson stated, vowing for his administrationโ€™s continuous support.

Likewise, Sports and Development Office (SDO) Director Dr. Emerson B. Cuzzamu commended the dedicated coaches and trainers. โ€Your mentorship shone through every achievement. Even in the face of challenges, your adaptability and leadership ensured TAUโ€™s strong national presence. This triumph is as much yours as it is the athletes,โ€ Dr. Cuzzamu conveyed.ย

Highlighting the cumulative performance, Region III, represented by student-athletes from 14 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), finished as 2nd Runner-Up. Competing against 17 region athletic associations nationwide, the Central Luzon delegation secured an impressive 54 gold, 68 silver, and 59 bronze medals, demonstrating exceptional talent, resilience, and sportsmanship and bringing immense pride to the region, showcasing Central Luzonโ€™s inherent strength and cooperation.

In a Facebook post, the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office III (CHEDRO III) extended its appreciation to all members of the regional contingent. CHEDRO III also emphasized that Central Luzonโ€™s success highlights how sports can cultivate excellence and solidarity, urging everyone to keep inspiring others and fueling the spirit of champions.ย

Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) has once again gained international acclaim as its groundbreaking research on smart onion farming secured the Best Presentation Award at the 6th Asia Joint Conference on Computing (AJCC2025) at the Kansai Kenshu Center in Osaka, Japan, from 21-24 April.

Competing against top-tier research from across the continent, the project stood out for its innovative approach to revolutionizing agricultural productivity through smart farming technologies.

The award-winning study, titled โ€œDevelopment of Smart Technologies for Profitable Onion Production,โ€ was funded by the Department of Science and Technology - Grants-in-Aid (DOST-GIA) and presented by Mr. Jayson J. Elenzano, Associate Professor III and project member, under the leadership of Dr. Amy Lizbeth J. Rico, General Manager of SMART Agriculture Center.

The research showcased the successful integration of IoT-based monitoring systems, automated irrigation, and smart vertical farming techniques to optimize onion cultivation. Key findings revealed a 40% increase in net profitability and a 30% reduction in water usage compared to traditional layered farming methods, proving the viability of smart agriculture in enhancing both sustainability and yield.

TAU President Dr. Silverio Ramon DC Salunson congratulated Dr. Rico and Mr. Elenzano and mentioned that such an accolade not only reinforces TAUโ€™s reputation as a hub for research excellence but also sets the stage for broader adoption of smart farming solutions in the country.ย

โ€œTAUโ€™s recognition underscores its growing influence in agricultural technology and our commitment to addressing global challenges in food security and climate change,โ€ Dr. Salunson said.
