The Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) community received an early Christmas gift as it secured the 324th spot globally and moved up an impressive 153 places from its 477th position last year in the 2024 UI GreenMetric (UIGM) World University Rankings (WUR). TAU now ranks 173rd in Asia, 5th in the Philippines, and 1st in Central Luzon, affirming its status as a leader in sustainability and innovation.

TAU’s significant rise in the rankings highlights its commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation. The University’s initiatives, like the Calao Forest Reserve, engineered bamboo facility and bambusetum, and SMART Agriculture Center among others, underscore its role as a benchmark for sustainable practices. Additionally, TAU’s educational and research programs continue to spark progress toward ecological balance and community resilience.

This year, TAU demonstrated outstanding performance and joined 62 other PHEIs, ranking 3rd in the Philippines for both Setting and Infrastructure and Energy and Climate, 9th in Transportation, 13th in Water, 15th in Waste, and 22nd in Education and Research. These achievements mirror TAU’s steadfast commitment to effective and efficient operations and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 15th edition of the UIGM WUR featured 1,477 institutions from 95 countries. The results were officially announced on 12 December, during the UIGM Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This annual ranking is a crucial undertaking to advance institutional growth, quality assurance, and internationalization by inspiring universities to enhance their sustainability efforts consistently.

As the University looks forward, it remains committed to sustaining its momentum and exploring new ways to champion sustainable development. TAU President Dr. Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson acknowledged the hard work and persistence of the University’s UIGM WUR Technical Working Group (TWG) and Secretariat and the entire TAU community. β€œThis achievement is not only a commendation of TAU’s ongoing efforts but also a call to further collaboration and innovation, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future,” Dr. Salunson imparted.

Wageningen University & Research topped this year’s global list while De La Salle University (DLSU) - Dasmarinas remained the Top PHEI with Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) leading in Northern Luzon.
