As the home of Central Luzonโ€™s first Global Citizenship Education (GCED) Regional Hub, Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), through the Office of External Linkages and International Affairs (ELIA) and College of Education (CED), represented Region III in the 1st GCC (GCED Cooperation Center) International Research Conference (IRCon) on GCED at Boracay Island, Aklan on 4-6 October.

The inaugural edition of said IRCon GCED spanned three days and brought together GCED researchers, experts, and advocates from the host university, Philippine Normal University, Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), Commission on Higher Education, Department of Education, Philippine GCED Regional Hubs, and other international and local partners.

Focused on addressing contemporary GCED issues and trends within the ASEAN context, IRCon GCED involved presentations of diverse research findings, best practices, and educational materials which typified the theme "Navigating Global Citizenship Education in the New Normal: Bridging Research Innovations and Impactful Actions."

As part of TAUโ€™s commitment to GCC, Dr. Claire Anne A. Olivares, CED Dean and GCED Regional Hub Focal Person, delivered a lecture on Global Discourses, a project initiated by ELIA and CED whichย  encompassed virtual classes and workshops comprising various GCED and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) topics. Commenced in 2022, the sessions focused on methods and resources supporting a global competence framework, integrated into lessons and assessments.

โ€œIt initially centered on the discourses that addressed the purpose, vision, and learnings as well as the university's and its partners' pursuit of a coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic and, more importantly, an embedded practice to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals,โ€ Dr. Olivares explained.

In another breakout session, Mr. Marlon B. Espedillon, ELIA Director and GCED Regional Hub Assistant Focal Person, moderated the presentation of research and best practices on GCED pedagogies. Both Dr. Olivares and Mr. Espedillon also actively participated in Philippine GCED Roadmap Development on Research and Innovation, a policy-setting forum which aims to create a local research ecosystem centered on GCED.
