For the first time, Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) has been featured in the Asia University Rankings (AUR) of the Times Higher Education (THE), a UK-based organization specializing in providing in-depth analysis and extensive reporting of the global higher education sector.

Although TAU was rated in all other indices, it remains to be in compliance with the requirement of having 1,000 research papers published in reputable journals within a span of five years. However, TAU was conferred a reporter status to reflect its commitment to participate in the data submission process and its continued institutional development.

TAU is the sole Philippine higher education institution (PHEI) located north of Metro Manila and is one of the smallest HEIs in the AUR. TAU has also been previously ranked 601-800 in THE's Impact Rankings and listed in World University Rankings (WUR) as a reporter.

Only 10 PHEIs made it to AUR this year with Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) topping the local list and landing on 84th spot in Asia. Before making it to the Top 100 this year, ADMU was  formerly given a reporter status. Meanwhile, two of China’s elite universities, Tsinghua University and Peking University, attained the top spots in the 11th edition of AUR, respectively, with National University of Singapore (NUS) coming in third and achieving the highest rank in the ASEAN region.

AUR 2023 utilizes 13 performance indicators which are similar to THE WUR. However, these criteria are calibrated to incorporate the specific qualities of Asian HEIs.

The 2023 ranking includes 669 universities from 31 countries and territories. According to the analysis conducted by THE, a significant factor contributing to the changes in this year's rankings is the focus on internationalization of HEIs to attract a large influx of foreign students, researchers, and professors in undergraduate and graduate levels.
