Three representatives from the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) participated in the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) National Conference held in Panglao, Bohol as organized by the Commission on Higher Education – International Affairs Service (CHED-IAS) on October 16-17, 2024.

The TAU delegation was led by Dr. Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson, TAU President, accompanied by Dr. Sheila R. Lingaya, Assistant Director of External Linkages and International Affairs (ELIA) and Chief of International Mobility of ELIA, as well as Ms. Caroline N. Gabis, Chief of Partnership Development of ELIA

Under the leadership of Atty. Lily Freida M. Milla, CESO III, OIC-Deputy Executive Director IV and Director of CHED-IAS, the said event aimed to expand the internationalization (IZN) initiatives within Philippine Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) where representatives from various institutions nationwide attended the said conference.

With the theme "Rebooting and Harmonizing Internationalization Initiatives," the conference focused on broadening perspectives on student and staff mobility programs through a multisectoral approach. For this, the TAU delegates shared their progress on mobility initiatives and partnerships with the TAU IZN roadmap.

Participants received a warm welcome from Dr. Maura Consolacion D. Cristobal, Director IV of CHED Region VII, followed by an inspirational message from Atty. Milla. On the other hand, Dr. Heracleo Lagrada, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) presented "UMAP at a Glance" highlighting the network's goals.

The conference covered essential topics including UMAP membership requirements and benefits; presentation of the IAS and UMAP National Secretariat; the UMAP’s Student Connection Online (USCO) System and its challenges.

Additional sessions discussed the Collaborative Open International Learning (COIL) initiative; the UMAP International Task Forces, allowing participants to brainstorm solutions. Dr. Rosette Aira Camus, Dr. Maria Obra Jr., and Dr. Moira Uy chaired the topic for β€œCreative Solutions for Mobility Concerns.” Meanwhile, the discussions on β€œCrisis and Change Management” was led by Dr. Grace Carrido, Dr. Lagrada, and Sr. Maruja Padre Juan.

The TAU officials took part in a workshop at the latter part of the conference which was then followed by closing remarks from Dr. Lagrada.
