Universities and local government units strengthened their commitment to sustainable development as the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Philippines (SDSN PH) convened stakeholders during the Luzon Roadshow on 17 April at Ateneo de Naga University. The event underscored the vital role of university-town partnerships in localizing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) catch-up plans, highlighting collaborative strategies that translate research, innovation, and community engagement into inclusive and sustainable local development.

Representing Tarlac Agriculture University (TAU) were Dr. Marianne P. Villaruel, Director of External Linkages and International Affairs (ELIA) office, and Ar. Yoana Alexis F. Juan, Chief of the Institutional Development and Resource Generation (IDRG) unit.ย

During the SDSN PH Luzon Roadshow on Localizing SDG Catch-Up Plans, Dr. Villaruel and Ar. Juan engaged in panel discussions, knowledge-sharing sessions, and collaborative dialogues with local government units and partner institutions to strengthen universityโ€“town partnerships for sustainable development.

The discussions included Panel Discussion 1: Knowledge Partnership for SDGs where the speakers emphasized that universities must adopt creative and community-engaged approaches by aligning research with societal needs and development plans for sustainable impact.ย

In Panel Discussion 2: Collaborating for SDG solutions, participants were encouraged to focus on inclusive, citizen-driven development through strategic planning anchored on priority sectors and SDG goals, with strong collaboration between communities and universities. It also emphasized the need to translate research into policies and institutionalize initiatives to ensure sustainability and continuity across leadership changes.

Subsequently to the discussions, the host agency engaged the participants in the sharing of localized SDG initiatives during the breakout session.

The SDSN PH Luzon Roadshow concluded with a reaffirmation of collaborative commitment among universities, LGUs, and partner institutions to advance SDG localization.

Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) formalized a strategic partnership with Agriwave Inc. through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 25 April at Forest Crest Nature Hotel and Resort in Nasugbu, Batangas.

The signing ceremony marked the culmination of an initial assessment conducted during a site visit on 28 February led by Dr. Leonell Lijauco, Vice President for Planning and Quality Assurance (VPPQA), Dr. Edmar Franquera, Vice President for Research, Extension and Training (VPRET) alongside University President Dr. Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson. The visit laid the groundwork for collaborative opportunities between the University and Agriwave Inc., particularly in agricultural development and innovation.

Representing TAU in the formal engagement were Dr. Salunson, University President; Dr. Arnold R. Lorenzo, Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA); Dr. Sonny DC. Torres, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs (VPASA); Ms. Maria Regina D. Salunson, Executive Assistant IV, and Ms. Ronelie De Guzman, Administrative Assistant V.

Meanwhile, Agriwave Inc. was represented by its President, Mr. Joel T. Go, along with Ms. Melanie Go and Mr. Lino S. Ong, who serves as the companyโ€™s Legal and Finance Officer.

The meeting convened not only for the ceremonial signing but also for in-depth discussions on initial plans, defined roles, and shared commitments. Both parties expressed a unified vision of advancing agricultural development through integrated efforts in research, extension services, and agri-tourism initiatives.

One of the main points emphasized during the discussion was the inclusion of land resources as a means of engaging students through practical activities that increase their productivity and innovation. Both parties will be working hand-in-hand to conduct research and development on crop production using new technologies, including tissue cultures.

TAU and Agriwave Inc. also explored opportunities for the mass production of high-demand crops, aligning academic expertise with industry needs. The integration of agri-tourism and environmental protection strategies was likewise highlighted as a means of maximizing land use while promoting sustainability.
